Caring For The Tapes You Make With Your Camcorder

Because your camcorder is an expensive purchase, most people put a lot of thought in the caring and storage of it to be sure that will have a long life. But what about the tapes you have recorded? They are the main reason you have purchased a camcorder. Typically a camcorder owner puts little thought into taking care of their recordings. They wrongly assume that keeping them stored in their home with climate control is enough.

Your Camcorder Recordings Worst Enemies

Just like a still camera, the tapes you make with your camcorder are vulnerable to magnetic fields along with heat and humidity. Whether you have audio or video tape, floppy or zip disks, the storage and care you give them will make the difference between a lasting recording and a cherished moment that has been forever erased or ruined.

Magnetic fields are lurking around your media center such as the television and audio speakers. If you are like the average Joe, most of your video and audio recordings are clustered around this area. This is no place to store expensive CDs and more importantly precious memories of family events.

Optimum Storage for Your Tapes

Temperature has a lot to do with the successful storage of tapes. The optimum temperature to store your valuable tapes is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity is also a key factor in keeping your tapes safe. The relative humidity of the storage area should be in the percentage range of 50 to 60. The area should be free of dust and far from direct sunlight.

A good idea to keep the tapes at peak performance is to fast forward the tapes to the end at least once or twice a year, followed by rewinding them. Layer to layer adhesion and the build up of stress can be avoided by exercising your tapes as you would your body.

Mildew can also grow on your tapes so adequate ventilation is another factor that must be considered when you are contemplating where to store your tapes. Air circulation is important so that your tapes stay as fresh as the day you recorded them.

The worst place to store your recordings is in a car. Sunlight, heat and humidity will quickly ruin what may have taken hours to record. Your tapes are an important keepsake and taking good care of them will allow you and perhaps even future generations to view them with a smile and a touch of nostalgia.

When camcorders went from analog to digital a few years ago, the ability to capture and edit home movies leapt forward light years. With a digital video camcorder and computer, scenes can now be deleted or rearranged and graphics, special effects, and even sound tracks added. The ability to produce near professional quality film is now within the grasp of the average consumer. However, the proper equipment is necessary to perform these miraculous feats and an up-to-date computer is as critical to the process as the camcorder itself.

The Right Stuff

The ability of a computer to successfully work with the digital video from a camcorder depends primarily upon things such as having enough memory, processing power, and the right connections. Inadequate memory can limit the editing function and insufficient processing speed can slow the editing process to a crawl while limited disk space will be gobbled up at the rate of 215MB per minute of film.

How Much Is Enough?

When working with digital video from a camcorder, it’s important to realize that more is better! The suggestions offered here are certainly not maximums, but they are also not absolute minimums. They are merely general recommendations to assure that the task of video editing camcorder film is a creative, rather than painful, experience.

- 512MB of RAM is recommended. It’s possible to work with about half this amount of memory but editing such as adding special effects, titles, and graphics becomes difficult with less memory. The video card should also have at least 32MB RAM.

- 60GB hard drive is recommended but 100GB is better. Again, it is possible to work with digital video with as little as 30GB but disk space will disappear very quickly. Certainly, budget constraints can influence selection.

- 1GHz or higher processor to help assure that editing can be done without unreasonable delays.

- FireWire or USB 2.0 port for the fastest transfer from camcorder to computer.

Other Elements of Success

- Windows XP and Mac OS X are the applications of choice.

- Video editing software. Numerous products are on the market making it easy to select a program that is compatible for any computer model. It is important to investigate the minimum system requirements as stated in the literature of any software purchased.

- Higher resolution monitors can make editing easier and most editing software will dictate the minimum resolution.

- A DVD burner is not required for digital video editing but does allow the user to burn movies to disk and view them on a DVD player.

Although the list of requirements for a computer to handle digital video from a camcorder is somewhat lengthy, most up-to-date computers are certainly up to the task. Once all of the requirements are met, creating home movies that will win the “critical acclaim” of family and friends is just a few mouse clicks away.

In recent years, manufacturers are striving to make the life of digital camcorder batteries longer. The newly available models of digital camcorders available today are manufactured with highly efficient batteries that give utmost satisfaction after usage to the end customer.

Many reputed camcorder manufacturing companies are competing to give a better power performance to the consumer. Miniaturization is giving rise to more problems, as it requires that a small battery remain charged for a longer time span. However, with the latest innovation and application of lithium ion chemistries, you can expect better results at cost-effective rates.

Most manufacturers do give a warranty of three years on their batteries. But the market is also crowded with less well-known but highly effective lithium ion battery providers with more life span. With increasing dependency on the original versions of lithium ion cells dying out, lesser-known brands are picking up pace in the market by maximizing efforts and revenue.

When purchasing a new video camera, it is crucial to be aware of all the functions and parts of the device to avoid any future problems. On average, digital camcorder batteries costs fairly $40-$60 or possibly more if it has an extended life.

- 4 Types of Camcorder Batteries Available:

1. Lead-Acid: Lead-Acids are reliable, inexpensive, and suffer from a number of drawbacks as they get discharged multiple times.

It’s necessary that lead-acids be fully charged or else they cease functioning if uncharged for long. Keep these in a cool, dark place and always recycle them properly as their content is extremely hazardous to the environment.

2. Nickel Cadmium (NiCd): These were among the most common type of camcorder batteries a decade ago. You can find them now in older models of video cameras. These have the capacity to handle higher loads and has long life with constant discharge pattern.

Nickel Cadmium delivers the same level of voltage throughout the entire discharge cycle and even let you know when the power is low. This type should be fully discharged before recharging, in order to avoid the memory effect that plagues this type of power cell.

It’s important to keep NiCds cool, dry and safe, though the contents are not dangerous but they are highly poisonous and bad for the environment.

3. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH): NiMHs offer 10 to 25% greater capacity than the NiCds, but are also prone to memory effect like NiCds. It’s necessary to allow complete discharge of NiMHs before recharge.

4. Lithium Ion: These new innovations offer quick charge times, have longer life span, steady discharge, light weight and are available in small size. Lithium ions offer more charge capacity than NiCds, and do not suffer from memory effect.

Lithium Ions are the most expensive type available in the market. Unlike other types, it’s required that these are fully charged.

Keep these cool, safe and dry from shock and recycle them before it’s discarded.

- Camcorder Care:

Learning to care for your camera after purchase is crucial to ensure performance and longevity. As any other electronic device, even a camcorder requires care and maintenance for effective functioning

* A slightly damp cloth should be used to clean the exterior. Avoid contact with water. It’s highly recommended to use cleaners suggested by the manufacturer.

* Protect from dust, dirt and scratches. Keep the lens covered with cap.

* Protect the lens. Avoid touching the lens with fingers as oil from person’s skin can gradually erode the protective surface. Avoid exposure of the lens to the sun and use ultraviolet lens filter for added protection.

* When operating, handle it gently. Tapes should not be forced in to facilitate loading.

* It’s important to remember that batteries shouldn’t be stored in the device itself. Allow to completely discharge before recharge.

* Do not overcharge.

Eventually all batteries complete their span of life and need a replacement sooner or later. As observed, no matter the brand or model, camcorder batteries do have issues of running down at the most crucial moment. So consider all factors with a careful understanding of the product requirements before purchase.

Camcorders are a great addition to any home because they allow you to capture those precious memories that a still camera just cannot do justice for. Luckily, most of the camcorders on the market today are very simple to use and enable the user to simply point and shoot and the rest is done for the user! Camcorders have come a long way in the last 10 to 15 years, becoming more affordable and easy for just about any user to utilize in the way that they want.

Recording Your Short Candid Videos with Ease

If you would like to record a short candid video of the family or of a vacation or sporting event you will find that it is quite easy. The first thing you will need to do is power up your video camera and remove any cover that may be over the lens. At this point you should check the battery power, as you want to ensure that you have enough power to record everything you want. Next, you will need to check that you have a disc or tape that has enough recordable space on it for the amount of time that you plan to record.

At this point you can simply hit record and point the camera at the object that you would like to record. When you are shooting with a camcorder you should always be aware of a light. If you are inside you may need to open curtains or turn on a light and if you are shooting film in the dark you may need an artificial light source to help illuminate what you are recording.

Most camcorders today do not require you to actually put the camera up to your eye to see what is being recorded, instead there are often screens that will allow you to see exactly what is being recorded. This is helpful because you can see what is truly being recorded and you can also look around more easily to ensure that you are getting all the footage that you want. Remember that when you talk when you are recording with a camcorder that your voice will also be picked up as you are right next to the microphone.

When you are done shooting your candid video you simply need to stop recording and then turn the power off. Many different camcorders come with software that will allow you to place different graphics on the video if you would like, which can be a lot of fun. You can either take the disc or tape out of the camcorder or you can leave it in there to add to a tape at a later date. Recording with camcorders today really is very straight forward and they can provide a great way to look back on experiences in the future.

With the increasing capabilities and decreasing size of camcorders, millions have become home videographers. Of course, anyone would prefer to get “oohs” and “aahs” from their audience when sharing their video creations. To the surprise of many, one way to produce better films doesn’t even involve the camcorder or highly skilled filming techniques. One of the most important things that can be done to improve the quality of a movie shot with a camcorder is to use a tripod.

Certainly handheld shots are appropriate in some instances but a steady shot always produces a more “professional” looking result. The price range on camcorder tripods varies widely, from $15 to over $1,000 for the more professional type so there is usually one to match any budget.

Here are some hints as to features to consider when purchasing a camcorder tripod.

Sturdiness

Obviously, if the function of the tripod is to steady the camcorder a sturdy base is necessary. Dual-stanchion legs provide good stability. These tripods have two poles on each leg. Tripods put together with nuts and bolts tend to tolerate wear and tear better than riveted ones. The true test of a tripod is to set it up and apply firm downward pressure to assure there is no flexing, bending, or collapsing.

Ease of Set Up

If faster set up is critical, look for lever locks versus twist locks on the legs.

Leveling

Tripods not only keep the camcorder steady, but can also help keep a shot level. Having a bubble level on the tripod gives the user another tool for getting the best images. It is also advisable to get a tripod that allows height/length adjustment of each of the legs independently. This can assure a level set up even when shooting on uneven ground. If a lot of outdoor filming is planned, tripods with a spike should be considered to help stabilize better in these situations.

Weight

Because using a tripod is critical to a great looking movie, buyers want to be sure that they won’t mind carrying it anywhere. However, stability and strength should not be sacrifice for portability. For a really lightweight but strong tripod, look for the ones made of titanium, carbon fiber, or a similar lightweight material.

Smooth Movement

Not only can a camcorder tripod provide a steady stationary shot but it can also provide a solid base that allows for flawless panning when following action. Ball heads on the tripod can provide the smoothest motion while panning. Buyers should always use the head on a tripod before making a purchase to assure it has smooth, jerk-free movement.

Balancing

For more advanced film makers, a tripod with adjustable counterweights can help balance the camcorder as various lenses which can change the weight distribution are attached to the camera.

When selecting a camcorder tripod, consumers will need to determine what type of filming they will be doing and then identify the features that will be most important for those situations. If, for instance, the buyer will often film family football games but will never use a telephoto or other lens, a camera with a fluid head is much more important than one with counterweights. As with any purchase, thinking ahead can help buyers avoid paying for features they won’t use.

All camcorders are not created equal; different uses demand diverse features to optimize the performance of the camcorder. Knowing the most important factors for what you intend to use your camcorder for can make it an easier choice for you to make when you are ready to go shopping.

Features for the New User

If you are as knowledgeable about camcorders as you are about molecular biology, some of the features that will make it easy to use your new acquisition are ease of handling and stability when in use. Automatic exposure and quality auto modes will make it easy for you to just point and shoot.

Features for the More Advanced User

A person that has some sense of photography and videography will be able to handle a manual control as well as options for audio. Low light performance and a large zoom will be within their grasp. A tripod mount will be a must for any photographer worth their salt.

Using Your Camcorder for Outdoors and Vacations

When you intend to use your camcorder to record events outdoors such as sporting events or vacation memories, the features you will most appreciate is that it is lightweight and compact. The battery should have a long life so you don’t have to worry about it petering out right in the middle of the action. You will also want your camcorder to be stable and easy to handle. The camcorder should have a good viewfinder and work well for still performance.

For sports you will need fast shutter speed to catch the quick pace of the game as well as a large zoom and a manual control. You will want image stabilization so that the recording will be steady.

For Family Events, Recitals and Other Types of Ceremonies

These types of usages will require that you have a large zoom as well as a tripod. You will want low light and still performance along with a manual control and audio options. It will be important that the camcorder has ease of handling and firm stability. You will also want to have a recording medium coupled with VCR controls.

Finding the right camcorder for your specific requirements need not be too difficult. When you do your research and know the right questions to ask the staff when you visit the local electronics outlet, you will be able to make an informed choice that won’t bite you in the rear when you get it home.
